TAMPA, Fla. — As children head back to the classroom on Monday, school districts have developed a back-to-school checklist for parents and caregivers about how to best prepare their children for a safe and healthy school year.
What You Need To Know
- Some of the items on that checklist that school nurses should be made aware are any allergies, medication or mental health issues that students may have
- There are certain protocols in place if your child has a prescription from a doctor
Some of the items on that checklist that school nurses should be made aware are any allergies, medication or mental health issues that students may have.
In Hillsborough County, parents are required to provide a detailed written description of medical conditions such as epilepsy, allergies and any learning disabilities.
Then when it comes to medication. There are certain protocols in place if your child has a prescription from a doctor.
“That paperwork needs to be signed by a physician and once we have all of their paperwork, we go over it, we check dates. They have to bring us the medication. It cannot come in a child’s backpack or on their person. When we’re first establishing the medication, it needs to come from the parent or guardian of the child,” explained Alicia Brown, the school nurse at Clark Elementary School.
Although not required by the state for every grade, Brown strongly advises parents and caregivers to get children yearly physicals, eye exams and dental checks.
