Lovers of cheesy rom coms and historic buildings can rejoice – thanks to an addition to Netflix’s Christmas programming this year, you can enjoy both at the same time with A Castle for Christmas .
Starring Brooke Shields and Princess Bride heartthrob Carey Elwes, it features an author looking to buy… Well, you can probably fill in the blanks. But the castle itself is played by none other than Edinburgh stately home, Dalmeny House.
Home to the Earl of Roseberry, it’s not actually a castle at all. In fact, it’s a Gothic revival mansion that was only completed in 1817 – the first house to be built in that style.
Thanks to its turrets and towers, though, it definitely makes for a believable castle. It also holds the largest collection of Napoleonic memorabilia in Britain, although it’s not clear if that will make a cameo in the film.
Dalmeny House is a private residence, although parts of it are open to the public during the summer if you really want to live out your ‘wandering around a stately home’ fantasy.
According to the film’s synopsis, the owner of the castle, Duke Myles, isn’t looking to sell – and definitely not to an American. Will the squabbling pair discover they have more in common than an appreciation for Tudor revival architecture? Almost definitely.
This isn’t the first time that Netflix has used Edinburgh’s buildings as the setting for their festive fare – the Princess Switch series starring Vanessa Hudgens as Lady Margaret Delacourt, Vanessa Hudgens as Stacey DiNovo and Vanessa Hudgens as Fiona Pembroke films here as well.
