Lorenzo Sonego: Novak Djokovic has won everything, he can play what he wants

Italian tennis star Lorenzo Sonego has admitted that having the Nitto ATP Finals staged in Italy serves him as a motivation to make the prestigious season-ending event in the future. Sonego, 26, has had a good season but he won’t be playing at the Nitto ATP Finals this year since he is 20th on the Race to Turin list.

“For a Turinese like me, to have the ATP Finals at home is incredible, they are a stimulus to reach the top-10 level. I have already beaten top-10 players, but to reach such a ranking I have to find more continuity, be able to beat them every week, match after match,” Sonego said, per Sportsface.

The Italian Davis Cup has a group a promising young players consisting of Sonego, Matteo Berrettini Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. “We are a young group, we often train together and we get along very well off the court,” Sonego said.

Sonego reflects on the Novak Djokovic drama

There is a real chance to Djokovic will skip the Australian Open over his vaccine stance. “Djokovic has won everything, he just thinks about being calm and having fun and, if he doesn’t consider the conditions advantageous for himself, he can skip tournaments,” Sonego said.

A few days ago, Victoria Premier Dan Andrews indicated to Djokovic that if he wants to play the Australian Open he will have to show the proof of vaccination. “(The virus) doesn’t care what your tennis ranking is, or how many Grand Slams you’ve won,” Andrews said.

“It’s completely irrelevant. You need to be vaccinated to keep yourself safe and to keep others safe. “I don’t think an unvaccinated tennis player is going to get a visa to come into this country and if they did get a visa they’d probably have to quarantine for a couple of weeks,” he added.

“I don’t think that the person you indicated (Djokovic) or any other tennis player, let’s not personalise it … or golfer or Formula One driver will even get a visa to get here.”
