Those looking for last minute supplies for their Fourth of July celebrations may run into unexpected stores closures or unusual hours.
As streets fill with parades and firework shows take over the sky, some retailers are closing their doors early, or entirely, this Friday.
Here’s what’s open and closed July 4.
Grocery Stores:
- Aldi: Many locations will close at 4 p.m. Check your location’s hours here.
- Costco: Costco will be closed for the holiday.
- Jewel-Osco: Most locations are open for regular hours, but pharmacies may have limited hours. Check your location here.
- Kroger and Kroger family stores: Hours vary by location. Check your store’s hours here.
- Sam’s Club: Stores will close at 6 p.m.
- Trader Joe’s: Stores will close at 5 p.m.
- Tony’s Fresh Market: Stores will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Target: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
- Walmart: Stores will be open. Check your location’s hours here.
- Whole Foods: Many stores are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check your location’s hours here.
Convenience stores and pharmacies:
- 7-Eleven: Check your location’s hours here.
- CVS: Stores will be open during normal business hours, but pharmacies may close or have adjusted hours. Check your location’s hours here.
- Dollar General: Stores will be open during normal business hours.

Mail delivery and government services
Independence Day is a federal holiday, and government offices, courthouses, post offices and schools will be closed Friday. There will also be no mail delivery.
Illinois states offices, including Secretary of State’s Offices, will also be closed.
Some FedEx offices will close or see modified hours, and no pickup or delivery services will be offered. UPS also will not offer pickup or delivery, and some locations will be closed.
This week, garbage collection may be on a different schedule. Check with your local suburban municipality or check the Chicago garbage collection schedule.
Banks and the stock market
The Federal Reserve considers July 4 a holiday, so the majority of banks are closed. Most ATMs will still be available, however.
The U.S. stock markets will close early at 1 p.m. on July 3 and remain closed through the holiday.
