ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Every year, Zia Track Club sends a contingency to the national track and field meet. This year, one of its athletes made history.
Miles Vroman, a rising freshman at Sandia Prep, dominated the field in the 13-14 pentathlon. Vroman earned a first-place finish in high jump, second in 100m hurdles, second in shot put, third in long jump, and 12th in the 1500m. In total, he finished with 3,049 points and a winning margin of 160.
“It was scary because it’s all on the line right there,” he said. “But after that, it felt really good, it felt awesome. I don’t think there’s anything better. It feels so good stepping up on the top step after all your work.”
In addition to his work in the pentathlon, Vroman also competed as an individual in the high jump, 100m hurdles, and long jump. He earned All-American status in the high jump and 100m hurdles.
Earlier this season, he also set the state record in high jump for 13-14 yo boys this year with a jump of 1.82 m (5’11.65 inches)
Now accomplished at a national level, he is excited to take his talents to New Mexico high school competitions. He hopes to eventually earn a collegiate scholarship.
“If we can keep that hype and buildup around him and around the track sport in general, we’re really excited for what that looks like in the future,” said Sandia Prep coach Sid Cheer.
At the national competition, Vroman and Zia Track Club brought home five All-American medals and one gold medal in AAU discus.
Pedro Cuadra IV – AAU Junior Olympics National champion in discus, All-American
Skylar Johnson – 6th place in long jump, All-American
Justice Jones – 5th in the 1500m, All-American
