NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Current Lindy Boggs owner Bill Hoffman says that his original plan to turn the property into an older adult care facility is off the table as he was unable to secure the housing and urban development financing in time. Now, he hopes to find funding for a new plan.
“We’re looking at affordable housing. We’re looking at market right housing. We’re looking at small office complex. We’re looking at retail space,” said Hoffman.
As for why he doesn’t just demolish the building, he says that due to Lindy Boggs’ historical significance, he would prefer to restore as much of it as possible.
As for the parts of the property he is willing to tear down, he says it would cost around $3.5 million to do, which is too expensive for both him and the city.
“Until we can come up with a plan we can go and get financing for, we don’t have the $3.5 million to take it down,” said Hoffman.
In the meantime, Hoffman and the city have worked together to come up with a plan to increase security measures.
“We are asking the PD to install a couple of new security cameras in the area. A mobile one that will have lights so that fence off people, and they were also looking at additional measures and, in the area,” said Councilwoman Leslie Harris.
Residents and Hoffman have also discussed the idea of creating a mural program to help beautify the property as they search for a long-term plan. Many residents say what they heard at this meeting was not enough to satisfy them.
“The city is not doing anything to foresee the developers to actually make the building simply mothballed and attractive until there is a developer for it,” said resident Miles Trapolin.
