Multiple lanes on Interstate 88 in the western suburbs were closed Tuesday morning after pipes spilled off a semi truck and onto the road, with cars struck by debris and traffic expected.
The incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-88 in Downers Grove near milepost 129.5, Illinois State Police said, when a flatbed truck carrying metal pipes drove off the road and struck a light pole.
The crash caused the truck’s load of pipes to spill out onto the roadway, with pipes striking and damaging several vehicles, ISP said.
Sky5 photos and video from the scene showed dozens of metal polls strewn about the interstate, with crews working to cleanup the debris and trucks.
TrafficNet reported traffic and backups as far as Raymond Drive near the popular Morton Arboretum.
No injuries were reported, ISP said, and lane closures were in effect as cleanup continued.
