You likely pay thousands of dollars into your health insurance plan every year. But are you taking full advantage of the perks included in your coverage?
According to Kevin Brasler of Consumer’s Checkbook, some health insurance companies offer heavily discounted access to fitness centers.
“Some will actually reimburse your costs if you go often enough,” Brasler said.
Health insurance perks may also include access to weight loss programs and smoking cessation programs. You can find out what your health plan has to offer by logging into your account.
A section of United Healthcare’s website is devoted to “Wellness and Rewards Programs.” You can earn $25 for completing a health survey, $5.25 a week for walking five thousand steps a day, and $50 for getting an annual checkup.
On Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois’s website look for a section called, “The Benefits Beyond Your Health Insurance Plan.”
It offers discounts on fitness clothing, sneakers, gym memberships and more. Perks include: 30% off shoes from Sketchers and gym memberships starting at $28 per month.
NBC 5 Responds found some employers offer discounted partnerships with weight loss programs, so check with your human resources representative.
