Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are both happy after their retirement from professional tennis, having given their best for the sport and having understood when it was the right time to start a new chapter in their lives.
The Swiss legend ended his long career at the 2022 Laver Cup – which took place at the O2 Arena in London – in which he played his last doubles match right alongside his eternal rival and friend Rafa. The previous two seasons had been a real ordeal for the 20-time Grand Slam champion, victim of a serious knee injury that had forced him to undergo several surgeries (without being able to solve the problem).
When he realized that he would never be competitive at the highest level again – that is, after the elimination in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships – the former world number 1 began to think about how to announce his decision to his fans. His farewell in the event he created was the perfect way to end an almost unrepeatable career.
Roger and Rafa are true friends
Nadal – on the other hand – said goodbye to professional tennis in November last year, after representing his Spain for the last time at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. Even in Rafa’s case, physical problems prevented him from being as competitive as he was used to and his last title was now at 2022 Roland Garros.
His last dance in Malaga had fallen short of expectations, which is why the Roland Garros organizers dedicated a beautiful ceremony to him during the 2025 edition of the French Slam, in which the Spanish legend triumphed 14 times.
King Roger and the other members of the ‘Fab Four’ were also present at that celebration. Despite their careers being over, Federer and Nadal continue to be friends off the court and the Swiss was spotted – along with his wife Mirka and children – at the Rafa Nadal Academy last Thursday.
