Kaufman, who founded the firm with Trish Zita in 2007, has been a force in public affairs inside and outside of Trenton for more than two decades. His retirement is part of a succession plan that has been in place for some time.

“Three years ago, in anticipation of my now-imminent 65th birthday, Trish and I put in place a multiyear succession plan, and we are now at the conclusion of that process,” Kaufman said in a note to the staff and clients. “I could not be more proud of what we, together with the fantastic people who work with us, have built over the past 14 years — there is simply not a more talented, dedicated and hard-working group of public affairs professionals anywhere. “

Kaufman saluted his longtime partner at the firm.

“Trish has been the managing partner for our firm, guiding us through this successful journey, and I have no doubt that the future of the firm will be even brighter than its past,” he said. “I wish this team and the tremendous group of clients it serves nothing but continued success.”

As part of the plan, Zita will become the full equity partner in the firm, which intends to move forward with its founding name for the time being.

Zita, a power player in her own right, continues to break ground in the profession. Kaufman Zita Group will be the first and only woman-owned firm among the biggest groups in Trenton.

“I am so grateful to Adam, and I am incredibly proud of what we were able to build and accomplish together over the past several years,” Zita said. “Adam has not only been a partner, but a great friend and leader who has inspired me, and all of us at KZG, to provide the highest level of client service.

“Adam always generously provided his wise guidance, mentorship and keen political insight, not just to his clients, but to all of us, and we are better for it. While we will surely remain in each other’s lives, we will miss our daily dose of his sharp wit, wonderful sense of humor and good nature. We wish him all the best and are excited for him to enjoy his next chapter in life.”
