INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Academic and financial challenges of Indianapolis Public Schools have shown significant progress, Indianapolis Public Schools said in a news release issued Thursday.
The Rebuilding Stronger plan called for reorganizing the district, consolidating schools, and improving facilities. The progress of the IPS Rebuilding Stronger came from recent data presented to the school board.
The plan also was designed to expand access to high-performing programs and free preschool. IPS said its data showed notable increases in enrollment in high-demand programs since the 2022–23 school year.
At Brookside School 54, student mobility — the movement of students from one educational institution to another — has decreased by 14%, attributed to the stability brought by Rebuilding Stronger. The elementary school has students in kindergarten through Grade 5.
Principal Shauna Lipscomb noted that families are now more involved in the school community, benefiting from the resources and programming provided by the initiative. In a statement in the release, Lipscomb said, “The quality of education at Brookside has given families a reason to stay, and we’re seeing that reflected in a stronger, more stable school community.”
Phil Gonzalez, a portfolio strategy analyst with IPS, told the school board that participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and the International Baccalaureate programs has more than doubled.
Data also showed middle school world language enrollment grew by 75% and instrumental music enrollment by 50%. Elementary computer science enrollment has surged by 120%, and fall middle school athletics participation has jumped 111%.
The release said facility improvements have also been a focus, with 32% of IPS students attending schools rated “good” or better as of the 2024–25 school year, up from 27% two years ago.
