NORTH CHARLESTON — The state Department of Social Services will investigate a child’s living situation after the boy was found naked wandering an area neighborhood.
Just after midnight June 30, a couple driving near Crossroads Drive spotted the shadow of a small person running across the roadway, according to an incident report. The pair stopped the car and got out to investigate.
Another bystander stopped to help the couple catch up to the small boy, who was reportedly completely nude. Witnesses called law enforcement.
The boy was non-verbal with officers and unable to point them toward his home. Authorities began searching the area and located a home with the front door ajar and lights on within the residence, the report states.
Officers called into the home but got no response, then began a protective sweep.
The home was in a state of disarray, according to the incident report. Food and clothing were scattered throughout, insects on floors and walls. Dirtied diapers were strewn around the residence.
The boy’s mother emerged from an upstairs bedroom after an officer again announced their presence. She positively identified her child, and told officers he has been diagnosed with autism.
North Charleston police contacted the S.C. Department of Social Services to conduct a follow-up investigation, the report states.
The child was taken to an area hospital, and authorities stayed with him until his mother arrived to assume custody.
No arrests were made in relation to this incident, according to the report.
