The Broward State Attorney’s Office says rapper YNW Melly’s double-murder retrial cannot start in September.
The capital murder case is scheduled to begin Sept. 10, but prosecutors said a current appeal in district court prevents the retrial from starting at that time.
Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused in the shooting deaths of two friends in October of 2018.
He has been in custody since his arrest in 2019. The first trial ended with a mistrial in 2023.
Judge Martin S. Fein has previously urged both the prosecution and defense to get the trial underway.
Demons could face the death penalty if found guilty in the murders.
A hearing is set for July 9 to discuss the retrial start date.
