Marriage Officiant
Minnesota legislation regarding marriage officiants in the state will have a law change effective July 1, 2025. This law change will require everyone who performs a marriage in the state of Minnesota to register with a county.
To register as a marriage officiant in Clay County, the individual would need to be at least 21 years of age or older and complete a Certificate of Filing. The certificate of filing is available at the Clay County Recorder’s Office or on our website. The fee to file in Clay County is $40.00. Once a person is filed, they are able to perform ceremonies anywhere within the borders of Minnesota.
The county where the marriage officiant is registered will be required to be filled in on the marriage certificate. A marriage certificate missing this information will not be able to be registered with our office.
Please contact the Clay County Recorder’s Office if you have any questions.
