FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mt. Vernon Street will close for approximately six weeks beginning Aug. 11 between Lulwood Avenue and Miller Avenue as part of the City’s Mt. Vernon and Miller Sidewalk Improvement Project. The roadway is expected to reopen in late-September (weather permitting).
The project will install new sidewalk segments to connect existing sidewalks along Mt. Vernon and Miller Streets with an aim to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity to nearby schools and residential areas.
Certain sidewalk segments will be accompanied by additional infrastructure improvements including stormwater drainage, sanitary sewer and gas/water lines.
Motorists should anticipate intermittent lane closures in the area throughout construction. Through traffic is advised to follow the posted detours utilizing Miller Avenue, Grand Street, Haseltine Avenue and Chestnut Expressway.
Contractor JD Wallace Contracting, LLC was selected to conduct the work. Construction is expected to cost approximately $813,000 and will be funded primarily through Federal Transportation Alternatives Program funds in combination with Clean Water Enterprise Funds, City Utilities reimbursements and ¼-cent Capital Improvement and 1/8-cent Transportation sales tax funds.
The project is anticipated for completion this fall.
