Padre All-Stars Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Manny Machado each hit solo home runs as the club beat the Diamondbacks 4-3 at Petco Park Thursday.
The homers by Machado and Tatis, Jr. – an All-Star starter and reserve, respectively – were the 16th by each player so far this season. Machado, however, has been hot – it was his third home run in the past seven games – but Tatis had been on a dry spell. It was his first homer in 15 games.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Arizona managed to collect two runs in the third. The first came via a Jose Herrera a sacrifice fly to right that drove in Jake McCarthy from third base. Then, Alek Thomas scored from third following a Corbin Carroll sacrifice fly to center.

But later in the inning, Tatis cut the lead in the half with one swing of the bat, a solo homer to right field.
San Diego then tied the score 2-2 in the fourth when Jackson Merrill scored from third following a Jake Cronenworth ground out to first.
Tatis nearly scored a second run in the eighth, but his deep shot to center was caught by Jake McCarthy, who leaped, stretched and contorted himself to nab the ball before it could get over the wall.

Padres starter Randy Vásquez, who allowed four walks, was yanked in the fifth inning with two men on base. Adrian Morejon came in, got out of the jam, and was credited with the win.
That’s because in the bottom of the inning, Machado led off, and with his first swing, a solo homer to left, gave the Padres a 3-2 lead.
After a mound visit, Arizona made a pitching change, with Juan Morillo reliving Eduardo Rodriguez. The move didn’t pay off as San Diego’s widened its lead – Xander Bogaert doubled on a ground ball to left that drove in Gavin Sheets from first.
In the seventh, Arizona’s Corbin Carroll scored from second following a Geraldo Perdomo double on a ground ball to right.
That tightened the score to 4-3, but the Friars held on for the win, managing a split of the four-game series against Arizona (46-48).
The Padres’ record now stands at 50-43, with a marked advantage for theem at home, where they’ve won 29 games and dropped just 17.
Up next, the Padres face the Philadelphia Phillies at 6:40 p.m. Friday in the opening of a three-game series that will lead to the All-Star break.
Notes: Right handed pitcher Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.67), who was struck by a line drive on June 24 and has been on the injured list since with a right forearm contusion, is scheduled to pitch against the Phillies tomorrow. He threw 63 pitches in a Triple-A rehab start on Sunday.
