Storms slammed a number of Chicago suburbs Monday evening, dumping several inches of rain and causing flooding throughout the region.
Across the area, a number of roads, streets and underpasses were closed, with many closures reported in the southwest suburbs and northwest Indiana.
Flood warnings were issued for portions of DeKalb, Kane, Kendall and LaSalle counties, with the National Weather Service saying flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.
“A Flood Warning means flooding is imminent or may already be occurring,” the NWS explained on its website. “Persons along rivers, creeks, and other waterways should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.”
The warning was set to remain in effect until 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A flood watch was issued for nearly the entire Chicago area until 4 a.m. The NWS reported numerous streets were closed or covered with significant standing water.
Photos shared with NBC Chicago showed drivers attempting to navigate the floodwaters, with their vehicles’ tires partially submerged by water.
The NWS received reports of the following closures and/or flooded streets:
- 183rd Street and LaGrange Road in Orland Hills
- U.S. Highway 2 in Whiting, Indiana
- Indianapolis Boulevard in Whiting, Indiana
- Naper Boulevard and 87th Street in Bolingbrook
- Reports of standing or flowing water in many streets or intersections – Joliet
- 1 to 2 feet of water reported on Gartner Road in Naperville
- Belmont near 59th Street in Downers Grove
- Washington Street in Darien
The NWS said three to eight inches of rainfall have been reported across the area, with the highest amounts near Interstate 80. Additional flooding was possible in the overnight hours, with meteorologists warning of heavy thunderstorms with rainfall rates of two to three inches per hour in some areas.
