Sunshine, soaring temperatures, and steamy humidity dominate through early next week before midweek relief.
Hot Weekend Heat Wave Continues
After some scattered storms Saturday evening that brought heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning, a few showers may linger into the evening hours and even early Sunday morning. Once those fade, though, we’ll be back under the influence of a strong ridge of high pressure. That means sunshine will dominate and temperatures will soar once again into the low and mid-90s. Factor in the humidity, and it will feel closer to 100 degrees at times.
Sunday Brings More of the Same
Sunday looks like a repeat of Saturday: hot, humid, and mostly dry, but not completely storm-free. A few isolated storms may pop up in the afternoon, especially where boundaries from earlier activity linger. If you have outdoor plans, be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take plenty of breaks in the shade. The combination of heat and humidity will push “feels-like” temperatures into the 100–105° range, which could make this our hottest stretch since late July. Heat Advisories may be needed if values creep higher.
Heat Holds Strong Into Early Week
The ridge of high pressure will hang tough into Monday and Tuesday, keeping highs in the low to mid-90s. In fact, Tuesday may end up being the peak of this stretch, with some areas west of I-65 flirting with the upper 90s. Humidity levels will remain high enough to send heat indices into the 100–105° range during the afternoon. Most of us stay dry, but a stray storm here or there can’t be ruled out.
Relief on the Way Midweek
By Wednesday, a cold front sliding in from the north should bring more organized storm chances along with some much-needed relief from the heat. Temperatures are forecast to back down into the upper 80s, with humidity potentially easing a little as well. Beyond that, seasonable August weather should settle in to wrap up the workweek.
Hurricane Erin Strengths Rapidly Overnight
Looking further out, the trough digging into the eastern U.S. by midweek may also help steer Hurricane Erin, a strong category 5 storm out in the Atlantic Ocean, away from the East Coast. While this storm is still far out, the Atlantic hurricane season is ramping up, and we’ll be watching it closely.
