A grieving family is speaking out after a judge granted bond to the man accused of being high and speeding when he struck and killed a landscaper in Cutler Bay.
Carlos Delahoz-Vega, a father of two, was working along U.S. 1 in a reflective vest when he was hit by a BMW last month. According to investigators, the impact threw him onto the hood and windshield before he landed violently on the pavement. He died at the scene.
“He gets to go home and sleep in his bed,” said Delahoz-Vega’s sister, Ileana Morales. “But my brother doesn’t get to sleep in a bed. My parents don’t sleep. I don’t sleep.”
A driver who was allegedly under the influence of drugs when authorities said he struck and killed a landscaper in Cutler Bay last month has been arrested on a vehicular homicide charge.
The driver, identified as Daniel Alvarez, appeared in bond court Thursday. An arrest report indicates Alvarez was speeding and under the influence at the time of the crash. Despite this, the judge granted him a $15,000 bond, house arrest, GPS monitoring, and a no-drive order.
Delahoz-Vega’s family, still reeling from the sudden loss, says the court’s decision has added to their pain.
“I would tell him that he took a part of all of us,” Morales said, referring to Alvarez. “…my parents, myself.”
The family says they plan to continue fighting for justice for Carlos, a hardworking man who was known for his love and dedication to his children.
“He would tell me that he loved me,” Morales added. “He always told me that he had me and my kids.”
