Approval has been granted for the final plans of the tramline connecting Florence Airport with Sesto Fiorentino town centre.
An update on the city’s tram system was provided by Tuscany’s regional president, Eugenio Giani, following the formal approval of the Sesto Fiorentino project. The first section of the line, from the airport to the scientific university campus, is fully funded with 240 million euro, while financing for the second section is currently being restructured.
“This is a strategically important route that will allow commuters arriving from Prato, Pistoia, Montecatini and Lucca to transfer at Castello and access the entire Florence transport system,” explained Giani.
The final plans will now move to the executive phase, followed by a public tender. “The tender process should be completed during 2026,” Giani added, “with construction starting in early 2027 and the tram line becoming operational in 2029, within the current legislative term.”
The long-awaited extension of the tracks between Careggi and the Meyer Children’s Hospital is also moving forward. “This 960-metre stretch will connect Meyer directly to the entire city of Florence and the regional rail network,” Giani noted. “The region has already financed the feasibility study and is working to secure the 40 million euro needed for construction either through national funding or the new European Union funding framework.”
