A teenage girl was fatally shot and a man was wounded Friday night near Avalon Park on the South Side.
Meeyah Smith, 16, and a 35-year-old man were in the 1200 block of East 83rd Street about 11 p.m. when someone walked up to them and fired shots, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The girl suffered a gunshot wound to the throat and was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, police said.
The man was shot in the thigh and was taken in good condition to the same hospital, police said.
Area 2 detectives are investigating.
