A suspect was arrested as authorities investigate a series of retail thefts across Southern California.
The man was identified as Anthony Steven Machuca, 29, from Baldwin Park, according to the Irvine Police Department.
On June 26, police investigated a robbery at a Target store at the Irvine Spectrum Center mall. Employees reportedly saw Machuca going to a cash register and, after “manipulating the screen,” successfully opening the cash drawer.
As workers attempted to confront him, he allegedly pushed an employee out of the way as he fled the store, police said.
Following an investigation, detectives identified Machuca as the suspect and located him at a hotel in Corona.
Body cam video provided by police showed officers surrounding Machuca outside the hotel and handcuffing him.
Detectives believe Machuca may be responsible for over 35 other Target thefts across Southern California.
He was arrested for robbery and battery of a police officer. No further details were released as the case remains under investigation.
