FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Fayetteville residents hear from candidates for city council on Sept. 4.
The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce held a forum at the library for Ward 1, Position 2 and Ward 2, Position 2.
Jody Verser is running for Ward 1, Position 2 against incumbent D’Andre Jones.
Various issues impacting the city like the housing crisis and traffic and infrastructure concerns were discussed at the forum.
Jones says he’s running for re-election to ensure the city continues to be a Fayetteville where everyone is a part of the community.
“As our community grows, we are getting people from all walks of life, so it’s very important that we have councilmembers who can understand and who can help manage growth,” Jones said.
Verser is a local architect, something he says will be a benefit to the community.
“I can be an advocate, Verser said. “That hands-on experience in getting things built and done, not only physically, but metaphorically, having goal-oriented action.”
Jesse Buchanan is running for Ward 2, Position 2 against incumbent Mike Wiederkehr.
Wiederkehr says voters should check his name on the ballot on election day because he’s the best candidate to maintain and enhance Fayetteville’s quality of life for residents.
“You should vote for me if you really believe that sense of place, and quality of places and quality of life matter,” Wiederkehr said.
Buchanan says housing is a very important issue to him and the reason he decided to run for city council.
“I definitely want to see more renter representation on the housing task force when it comes to the people who are actually making policy decisions and setting new ideas forward for the city,” Buchanan said.
The next forum will be on Sept. 5 at 5:45 p.m. at the Fayetteville Public Library featuring mayoral candidates. Mayor Lioneld Jordan will be joined by candidates Molly Rawn, Adam Firecat and Tom Terminella.
