SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It’s Travers Day! This event happens once a year and is best known for the Travers Stakes race. Some fans even call it the “Midsummer Derby.”
Doors opened at 9 a.m. and the lines were long, with people running to a picnic table or coming prepared with chairs of their own. For some people, like NEWS10’s Tyanna Xavier, it was their time experiencing Travers Day!
“What brought me was curiosity and I love experiencing new things,” said Andrea Canlla, a first-time Travers Day attendee.
“Excited to see everyone, see some horse races, I can’t wait its gonna be a fun day,” said Ryleigh Falbey, another attendee.
The race course brought fans together from all over the world. Five women, who are all good friends, reconnected at the track after years of not seeing each other.
“We all just graduated college,” said one of the women. “Were all together again so were spending time together.”
“First summer in four years that we’re all back together,” said another women in that friend group.
Travers Day was everyone’s chance to show up and show out by wearing their best outfit. Many people came in dresses with show stopping fascinator hats while others came in fancy suits and fedora hats. Fun fact: don’t worry if you forgot your hat because they had some for you there.
Of course, the main attraction was the races and horses, but you were also able to pet one. There were opportunities for fans to place bets, grab food and beverages, hang with friends and listen to live music.
“We love seeing what different vendors are out here. We always try a different location when we come in. We’re at the Fourstardave today,” said Jeff, an attendee at the event. “We’ve sat at some of the other locations. But right behind us, the Taste of New York is fantastic.”
