(KRON) — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning about knockoff Labubu dolls, known as Lafufus, which pose a choking hazard to children.
Labubu dolls, popular furry keychain toys with spiky teeth, have become a craze at places like Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco, where they are sold in Popmart stores and vending machines.
“These fake Labubu dolls are dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes,” said the Commissioner of the CPSC.
The CPSC warns that Lafufus do not meet the same safety standards as the authentic Popmart Labubu dolls, and their parts can break off, posing a choking risk to small children.
Mayra Romero, who owns a real Labubu, advises scanning the doll’s QR code to verify its authenticity. She notes that real Labubus have 9 teeth, while knockoffs have 10.
Romero also mentions that a real Labubu can rotate its head completely, and cautions against purchasing rare and limited edition Labubus from places like gas stations, as they are likely fake.
Romero expresses concern for her younger siblings, emphasizing the importance of ensuring they do not come into contact with the dangerous knockoffs.
