NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Erin is keeping us on the edge of our seat in what it will do next!
Over the last 48-hours, Erin became a hurricane then declared a category 5 major hurricane, but has since simmered down to a category 3 status on Sunday although the National Hurricane Center believes this is not the end yet.
Currently, Erin is located about 235-miles north-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico and 200-miles east of Grand Turk Island as it moves west-northwest at 13-mph.
Its maximum sustained winds clocking in at 125-mph as its hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45-miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205-miles.
Erin has downgraded to a category 3 hurricane and the NHC says, “Some increase in size and strength is forecast during the next 48-hours and Erin is likely to remain a dangerous major hurricane through the middle of this week.”
This west-northwestward motion is expect through Sunday, but Erin will be turning northwest and northward come Monday and Tuesday.
The NHC forecasts that “the core of Erin is expected to pass to the east of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas Sunday night and Monday.”
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Turks and Caicos Islands along with the southeast Bahamas.
The risks attached to Erin remain the same including:
-Heavy rainfall up to 6-inches which has potential to cause significant flooding or even cause landslides and mudslides.
-Strong damaging wind gusts that are putting some spots under tropical storm conditions.
-Life-threatening surf and dangerous rip currents as a result of the rough seas.
-Storm surge accompanied with large waves that could bring minor coastal flooding.
