Drier air continues to move into New Mexico to finish the week. Monsoon moisture will bring back more showers and storms starting this weekend.
It’s a hotter and drier day for many parts of New Mexico. Farmington is heating up to near-record high temperatures today, with above average temperatures across the rest of the state. A few showers and storms are still popping up in western and northern New Mexico. The Albuquerque Metro may also see a spotty shower or storm move through this evening. All storms will end overnight with mild low temperatures. Another round of meager afternoon storms will develop Friday afternoon in western and northern New Mexico with more above average high temperatures.
A pattern change is in store this weekend as the monsoon high pressure system that’s been sitting over the Four Corners will wrap moisture around into southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Starting Saturday, rain chances will increase across the northern half of the state, bringing rain chances down the I-40 corridor. There’s an even higher chance for rain Sunday as a cold front pushes south out of Colorado.
The chance for rain will expand into western New Mexico as the high pressure system starts moving south across the state. It will move southeast of New Mexico Tuesday. At the same time, a backdoor cold front will move in from the northeast. The cold front combined with an increase in monsoon moisture will bring widespread chances for showers and storms Tuesday through at least next Thursday. Some of this rain will be heavy at times. Temperatures will also be much colder behind the front starting next Wednesday.
