Dominic Thiem has added physiotherapist Carlos Costa to his team for the 2022 season. Costa is a well-known physiotherapist on the Tour, having worked in the past with Ana Ivanovic, Tommy Haas, Kevin Anderson and Joao Sousa.

Thiem picked up a wrist injury at the Mallorca Open in June and a few months later he fired his long-time physiotherapist Alex Stober.

After the split, Stober called out Thiem as he claimed the 2020 US Open champion “did not have the courage” to tell him in the face they were done. “There have been a few mistakes of course. My mistake, why this also happened through the media, was that I didn’t call him.

I’m also not the type of person who calls the same or the next day and then discusses all the problems for hours,” Thiem told Sky Sports Austria. “He also didn’t give me a chance to call because he then gave me the slap through the media.

Of course I was disappointed. But I definitely want to say that because the whole time was too tgood for that.”

Thiem eventually revealed why he fired Stober

“[Stober] said the US Open shouldn’t be a problem at all.

I then gave up much too early. Then the other forms of therapy went a little wrong. I played for a week and a half and then it happened again. That the tape hops out again,” Thiem revealed. Thiem’s wrist is making a great progress and the Austrian is set to return to action in December at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships.

“I’ll be returning to competition in December and will be playing wht MWTC 2021 in Abu Dhabi — with the objective ro return to the Tour for the 2022 Australian Open. Needles to say that the vaccine is needed to play both events, and in my case I have already been vaccinated.

I saw recently some news about this and I had made it very clear that I would get vaccinated. Hopefully the next time things won’t be taken this far as I saw last week,” Thiem said earlier this month.
