FORDYCE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — 50 years ago, a wrong turn in Fordyce gave the Rolling Stones a run-in with the law.
On July 5, 1975, Rolling Stones guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood were arrested in Fordyce while traveling between concert dates in Memphis and Dallas.
According to police reports, Richards was driving a rented Chevrolet Impala when officers initiated a traffic stop. Officers said they smelled marijuana, prompting a search of the vehicle.
No marijuana was found, but authorities reported recovering less than two grams of cocaine, said to belong to a passenger and a hunting knife in Richards’ possession, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas.
KARK reports the men later left in a private plane.
Neither musician served jail time. In 2006, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee issued a pardon for Richards’ reckless driving conviction related to the incident.
