HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Mountain Gap Middle School is mourning the loss of one of its students.
Eighth grader Kallel Fox was hit and killed while riding a bike after his second day of school on Tuesday. The school’s principal, Heather Bardwel, called the loss heartbreaking in a statement to parents and students.
As police continue investigating the deadly crash, those who live and work in the area tell News 19 the intersection at Bailey Cove Road and Green Mountain Road can be dangerous.
“Some of our parishioners in the past few years have experienced being hit as they’re pulling out of St. Thomas by pulling out where the light isn’t,” said Jeanne Randall, a deacon at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. “It’s because of the volume of traffic.”
The church is located on the corner of the intersection at Bailey Cove Road and Green Mountain Road. Randall said, a few years ago, the city put in a light and the intersection, and it has helped decrease the number of accidents. However, crashes are still happening.
Randall said a lot of people ride bikes in this area. The intersection connects to a greenway. While it has a crosswalk, Randall said she believes bike lanes are needed along the road.
“It was a tragic, tragic accident,” she said. “I think what we need to do moving forward our prayers should be that our city and our city planners look at these types of situations and try to find a way to make it safer.”
Huntsville police are asking people to make sure they stay aware while driving and remember to share the road with bikers.
