WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The House may have gone home, but the Senate is still in Washington and the controversy over the Epstein files is still top of mind.
Jeffrey Epstein’s former associate Ghislaine Maxwell is meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche inside a federal prison in Tallahassee, as lawmakers push for more information from the DOJ.
Maxwell’s attorney says she’s ready to cooperate.
“Trump is sending his personal lawyer Todd Blanche to try and execute a corrupt cover-up,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called the meeting a possible setup and called out the president for reportedly knowing his own name is in the Epstein files.
Sources say Attorney General Pam Bondi notified the president about that in May, the White House says it’s fake news.
“Whenever Donald Trump points a finger, it’s because he knows he’s guilty of what he’s accusing, everyone else of,” said Schumer.
Senate Republicans, like Markwayne Mullin, say Democrats are playing politics. Mullin introduced his own resolution to release the Epstein files.
“We all want transparency and for credible information on the Epstein case to be made public so that the American people can decide,” said Mullin.
Rhode Island Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse says Democrats are ready for the Epstein files to be released and Republicans are falling apart on the issue.
“This is a full-on political dumpster fire…everywhere you look around this town right now, the Epstein thing is blowing up and they are handling it very, very badly,” said Whitehouse.
Schumer is now calling on the administration to provide a closed-door briefing to all senators on the Epstein files.
