The only thing that felt less likely than CM Punk eventually re-signing with WWE before hell froze over and it happened was Punk eventually wrestling a match on one of the company’s Saudi Arabia PLEs. Well, that’s happening this weekend too, and one of the main reasons fans assumed it never would, even after Punk returned to WWE, has been publicly addressed by the man himself.
CM Punk Apologizes For His “Blood Money” Tweet
Punk made an appearance in front of a lot of Saudi Arabian fans in Riyadh on Friday to hype up Saturday’s Night of Champions. In a clip from the event shared by the Public Enemies Podcast, you can see that something being said by a fan in the front row catches Punk’s attention. Punk leans in to listen and then informs everyone else in attendance that the fan addressed something Punk tweeted at The Miz in 2020.
The tweet in question was a response to The Miz criticizing Punk on social media. Punk replied, “Go suck a blood money-covered d**ck” in response, and the fan, named Mohammed, was asking Punk to apologize.
I woke up and I was crabby and I wrote a mean tweet to The Miz. And I apologized to The Miz. And sir, what’s your name? Mohammed? Mohammed, I sincerely apologize to you. And I love Saudi Arabia.
Punk was getting a mixed reaction from the Saudi Arabian fans before that, but the acknowledgment of the tweet and the apology that immediately followed got a big, seemingly unanimous cheer. While it might mean he gets a more positive reaction from fans in attendance when Punk wrestles John Cena tomorrow, it might not go over well with fans elsewhere.
Punk’s Prior Feelings About Saudi Arabia Have Played A Role In The Build To Night Of Champions
There have been plenty of fans calling Punk a hypocrite since it became clear that what might end up being his final match with Cena will go down in Saudi Arabia. That Punk would have to leave his morals at the door to get to Cena has even been folded into the storyline. When Punk confronted Cena, the 17-time WWE Champion informed his old nemesis that if he wanted a shot at his crown, he’d effectively have to be a hypocrite to do so, telling him if he wanted the match, it would be waiting for him at Night of Champions.
The match and the event will go ahead as planned, although that wasn’t guaranteed as recently as the start of this week. The US attacks on Iran over the weekend had some calling for tomorrow’s PLE to be moved, postponed, or even outright canceled. Despite Saudi Arabia’s proximity to Iran, WWE Superstars are in Riyadh and the show will go ahead as planned.
