Here’s an important reminder: Clear snow and ice off your car to avoid hurting others.
A sheriff’s deputy and two other people were hurt in separate incidents Wednesday when large sheets of ice smashed their windshields, authorities said.
Two people were driving along I-95 northbound on the Tydings Memorial Bridge over Maryland’s Susquehanna River when “a large piece of ice [came] crashing through their windshield,” the Susquehanna Hose Company said in a social media post.
Photos show the car slammed into a highway barrier and the air bags deployed. The victims were taken to ChristianaCare’s trauma department.
Also Wednesday, an Anne Arundel County sheriff’s deputy was driving along I-97 when “a large sheet of ice slid off another vehicle and struck his windshield, causing it to shatter,” the office said. The deputy was able to stop and was treated for minor injuries at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. A photo shows the extent of the damage.
“Please clean off your vehicles. I know we’re supposed to have snow coming again. Snow and ice are a bad hazard, especially on the highways, when you’re going a high rate of speed,” Cpl. Angie Hines of the sheriff’s office said.
In addition to clearing off your own car, increase your following distance behind “high-profile vehicles that may be unable to clear their tops,” the Susquehanna Hose Company advised.
Maryland lawmakers are considering the Clear Before You Drive Act, which would fine people caught driving with snow and ice on their car. A vote is expected next month.
