A member of an evening cleaning crew at a suburban school was arrested after chasing two juveniles with a knife and threatening them in the school parking lot.
Brandon J. Mumme, a 43-year-old member of a contracted cleaning service that works evenings at Clinton Elementary School in South Elgin, was arrested Friday for pulling a knife and chasing two juveniles after they attempted to take pictures of his license plate, police said.
Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to Clinton Elementary School, located at 770 Mill Street in South Elgin, for a report of a man who entered the building with a knife, police said.
Police officers on scene met with two juveniles and a relative who reported they were riding electric scooters through the school parking lot when a vehicle entered and cut them off, police said.
After the kids were cut off by a vehicle driven by Mumme, a verbal exchange occurred and then both parties separated, police said. The kids later returned to photograph the vehicle’s license plate, at which point Mumme exited the building and confronted them.
During the confrontation, Mumme pulled out a pocket knife and threatened the juveniles, police said, adding that Mumme advanced toward the kids with the weapon. The juveniles fled the scene and called police.
Police located Mumme near his vehicle at the school and arrested him.
Mumme later admitted to pulling the knife and chasing the juveniles, police said.
Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of aggravated assault on public property and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against Mumme.
Mumme was processed and released, according to police. He was also served a trespass notice that prohibits him from entering any School District U-46 property.
