KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed one of their top defensive players to a long-term extension. DE George Karlaftis signed a four-year, $93 million extension on Sunday, with $62 million guaranteed, according to reports.
The Chiefs are making sure their top players stay put; the deal comes less than a week after they signed RG Trey Smith to a historic four-year, $94 million deal with $70million guaranteed.
Karlaftis has tallied 24.5 sacks through his first three seasons and has led the team in sacks the past two seasons.
He finished the 2024 regular season with eight sacks, nine tackles for loss and five pass deflections. Karlaftis has been very productive since the Chiefs drafted him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
His play earned him a PFWA All-Rookie team nod in 2022.
The 2022 draft class was a stout one for the Chiefs, also including two-time All-Pro defensive back Trent McDuffie, whose contract will likely be the next priority for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs picked up his fifth-year option in April and his contract is set to expire in 2026. Is an extension for him approaching?
As for now, the Chiefs have made huge moves to shore up both sides of the ball before they begin training camp on Tuesday.
