KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are back in action for the first time in months after a preseason matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.
While the preseason games don’t technically count for anything, it’s the perfect time to see where the team is at before official play starts in September.
The Chiefs are leaving Arizona 0-1 in preseason, losing to the Cardinals 17-20. Here’s who stood out:
Hot start
The Chiefs kicked the ball to start the game, but ended up getting the ball first anyway after cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. That set Patrick Mahomes up in great field position to toss a one-yard touchdown ball to Jason Brownlee less than one minute into the game.
It was clear to see that the Chiefs were ready to get the season started as they got off to essentially the hottest start possible.
It’s a good sign for Brownlee, a second-year receiver out of Southern Miss. He’s in a highly competitive roster spot race in the wide receiver room with others like Nikko Remigio and Skyy Moore.
Backups deliver
Gardner Minshew, the latest backup quarterback to Patrick Mahomes, was pretty efficient in the snaps he got. He threw six out of nine completions and ran in a two-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Second-year back Carson Steele had a few solid carries as well. He got the ball three times, converting it into 15 yards.
Additionally, Jaden Hicks grabbed an interception off the Cardinals’ starting QB Kyler Murray in the first quarter.
The previously mentioned Nikko Remigio made his case for a roster spot as well. He took a kick return nearly 50 yards the other way, setting the Chiefs offense up nicely. Remigio reeled in two catches for 24 yards as well.
Nohl Williams also got a kick return; he took that one for 27 yards.
Roland-Wallace continued his stellar game with an interception early in the third quarter as well. With the fumble recovery and the pick, he’s sure to have made a somewhat lasting impression on the Chiefs’ staff.
Other notable performances included rookie wideout Jalen Royals (3 rec., 14 yards) and Harrison Butker, who drilled a 58 yard field goal.
Up next
The Chiefs will get the Seattle Seahawks next. That game will be on Friday, August 15, at 9 p.m. The starters should get a little more playing time against the Seahawks, but don’t expect them to play for more than a half.
