Chicago police are warning residents after a series of ATM thefts was reported across the city.
A total of 18 thefts occurred in the Austin, Belmont-Cragin, North Lawndale, River North, Near North, Portage Park, Lower West Side and Little Italy neighborhoods.
In each incident, suspects in either a stolen or rented SUV broke a window or used a prying tool to open a business’ door. They then either removed the ATM from the establishment or pried the ATM open to obtain the cash inside, authorities said.
The suspects loaded the ATM into their vehicle and fled the scene in most of the thefts.
