Justice requires action in latest ICE shooting
Re: “Fatal shooting pits state against feds” (Page A1, Jan. 26).
Alex Pretti wasn’t a domestic terrorist. A domestic terrorist killed Alex Pretti.
American justice requires the Trump administration to release the shooter’s name and to retract their false narrative about Pretti.

ICE shooting reveals a force without restraint
Re: “Fatal shooting pits state against feds” (Page A1, Jan. 26).
The tactics employed in Minneapolis by ICE and their results are at best tragic and unbelievable. As a USAF veteran and career firefighter, and having been in, and now teaching, effective leadership, I attest to the following:
A deployed force (trained group), acting without leaders’ intent having been communicated to them through concise and clear orders, and where the force employs little to no effective on-scene tactical control, is nothing more than a mob.
Now imagine if the leaders’ intent communicated to ICE on the streets of Minneapolis is that anything goes: no restrictions or limitations. If our outrage isn’t enough to cause us to act now, then maybe the fear that they are coming for us next will be our call to action.

Is killing on streets what MAGA voted for?
Re: “Fatal shooting pits state against feds” (Page A1, Jan. 26).
ICE is now an army of thugs unleashed on American communities to sow chaos and violence, all in the name of President Trump.
Inadequately trained, undisciplined, unfit for service, these masked goons are empowered and emboldened by the inaccurate, incendiary rhetoric from the president, Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem.
Trump voters — is this what you voted for? Is this the America you want?

After GOP House moves, they shouldn’t complain
Re: “GOP rails against Newsom’s late date for House election” (Page B5, Jan. 25).
So Republicans are incensed, outraged that Gov. Newsom chose the last legal date for an election to replace deceased Rep. Doug LaMalfa … the same Republicans who shuffled their feet, whistling a ditty while House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to seat a Democrat who had already won her election, all because he knew she would be the last vote needed to compel the Department of Justice to release the Epstein files.
Republicans listed several issues for which they need representation. I will mention two. Wildfires, a real problem for the district. But Donald Trump has already stiffed L.A. after their fires, and he wants to defund FEMA. Just today FEMA reduced the pay rates for mutual aid responses. Smaller departments will not be able to afford to respond. The slashing of Medicaid will likely close many rural hospitals, most of which are located in red districts. Help is not on the way.
