Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz may have established themselves as very dominant forces in the men’s game but Casper Ruud still believes they are “catchable.”
Since 2024 January, the Grand Slam scene has been completely dominated by two players – Sinner has won four Slams over the last 20 months, while Alcaraz triumphed on three occasions. This year, the top-ranked Italian captured the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, while the second-ranked Spaniard made it all the way at the French Open. It should be noted that they met in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.
When it comes to Ruud – who made three Grand Slam finals between 2022 and 2023 – he hasn’t had much Grand Slam success over the past two years or in his matches against Sinner and Alcaraz. Against the Italian, the Norwegian has four defeats in which he didn’t clinch a single set. In the Alcaraz matchup, the situation is slightly better since he has one win in five meetings.
Heading into the US Open, Sinner and Alcaraz are widely regarded as the top favorites for the main glory. However, Ruud – who exited the ongoing Cincinnati Masters in the second round – believes he or someone else could spoil the party and cause an upset at Flushing Meadows.
Ruud: I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe that I could beat anyone
“Now you have two guys who honestly you can say they’re also taking it to a little bit of a different level. But I really still believe that they’re catchable, let’s say, that it’s possible to catch up with them, and they’re beatable. Otherwise, I don’t think I would be here if I didn’t believe that you can beat anyone,” the world No. 13 said on The Sit-Down podcast.
In one of his three Grand Slam final defeats, Ruud was beaten by the Spaniard – the world No. 2 beat the Norwegian in four sets in the 2022 US Open title match.
