Carlos Alcaraz thinks Jannik Sinner will be just fine after removing two coaches just before the start of Wimbledon but adds that he wouldn’t do something similar.
Just before kicking off his campaign at The All England Club, Sinner decided to say goodbye to trainer Marco Panichi and physio Ulises Badio – the duo he hired in late 2024. The news made the headlines for several reasons. First, you don’t see every day a top player making such a major change just before a big tournament. Second, both Panichi and Badio enjoyed major success together as long-time members of Novak Djokovic’s team so many wondered what it was that made the Italian ditch them altogether.
Asked to offer his two cents on the situation, Alcaraz suggested that Tour physios and fitness trainers do a very good job so it’s not necessary to have them as team members. But personally, the five-time Grand Slam champion prefers to have his own physio and trainer simply because they perfectly know his body.
Alcaraz on Sinner firing Panichi, Badio
“I think the ATP has good physios that can take care of the players. A lot of players are traveling without physios and without the fitness coach. Talking about myself, I’ve been with them since a long time ago. Right now, I don’t see myself traveling without the physio or fitness coach. I built a really good relationship with both. They know my body even better than myself. For me, it would be tough,” the 22-year-old Spaniard explained.
To no one’s surprise, Sinner’s decision led to some wild theories being made, with the most popular being that something happened between the two and led to the world No. 1 removing his two team members. However, in his pre-tournament press conference, the 23-year-old Italian strongly denied that rumor.
Also, it is worth mentioning that Sinner fired Panichi and Badio only a couple of weeks after blowing a two-set lead in the French Open final against Alcaraz.
