Travel across the New York City area and New Jersey remained uneven Tuesday as transportation agencies continued to recover from the weekend winter storm, with lingering delays reported across rail lines, bus services, ferries and airports.
All three major regional airports are open, but disruptions persist and all three ranked among the 10 most “miserable” in the country, according to FlightAware’s ranking of cancellations and delays. LaGuardia was the most gridlocked, with 35 delays and 40 cancellations early Tuesday.
At JFK, the AirTrain had resumed service to all stations but was running at reduced levels. The Newark AirTrain was also “open and recovering,” but officials said it was operating on a limited schedule.
Travelers are encouraged to check on their flight status before heading out — and to leave extra time for getting to their gate.
Though not storm-related, the NYC Subway reported a number of delays Tuesday morning, including on the A, B, C and D lines due to switch problems near 168th Street and the E and F lines as a result of a signal issue near the Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue station. The 2 and 6 lines were also experiencing delays.
Bus riders can monitor for service changes and alerts at the MTA website.
Both the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North systems were experiencing scattered delays and cancellations due to weather-related switch and equipment issues. Affected LIRR branches included Hempstead, Montauk, Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson.
NJ Transit train service was still operating on a severe weather schedule, meaning reduced weekday service. Affected lines include Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley, Atlantic City, Morris & Essex, Main-Bergen/Port Jervis, Montclair-Boonton and Pascack Valley.
NJ Transit bus service, however, has returned to regular levels, though officials warned commuters to expect delays given icy road conditions. AccessLink, NJ Transit’s paratransit service, can also expect delays.
Amtrak warned passengers that delays could continue through Thursday. The railroad service said crews were busy inspecting tracks and other infrastructure to return trains to normal service. Passengers who find themselves stuck can rebook or request a refund via Amtrak’s website, mobile app or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL.
Ice build up on the East and Hudson rivers also created challenges for the NYC Ferry Service. As of Tuesday morning, ferries were unable to dock at some landings, including Battery Park City, Pier 79, Atlantic Ave/Pier 6-Brooklyn Bridge Park. The service warned that service to other routes and landings “could be temporarily suspended and/or delayed with little or no notice.”
For drivers — or more specifically drivers with parked vehicles covered in a foot of snow — the city’s alternate-side parking rules remained suspended.
