Burglars slammed a U-Haul moving truck into a retail shop in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood early Wednesday morning as part of a smash-and-grab, with a huge cement barricade damaged and the large truck left on the scene as suspects fled with merchandise.
About 1:48 a.m., police responded to a burglary call at a store in the 2100 bock of West Division. When officers arrived, they found a white U-Haul truck on the sidewalk in front of the store, along with heavy damage to the entrance of the business and a large barricade out front.
The large white U-Haul truck was left on the scene, in the 2100 block of West Division, with a dented and smashed bumper.
Photos and video captured by an NBC Chicago photographer from the scene show heavy damage to the heavy metal gate on the door of the store, with debris on the sidewalk and the bumper and front passenger side of the U-Haul smashed and dented.
Witnesses told police they saw three men get out of the U-Haul truck and enter the store through the damaged metal gate at the front. The men then left the store with merchandise and fled in a black sedan, police said.
No further details were provided, police said. No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
