Philadelphia got hit with over nine inches of snow over the weekend, with a helping of sleet and freezing rain for good measure. Next up? Frigid, subfreezing temps and possibly more snow in the coming week.
While most folks on Sunday hunkered down indoors to keep warm and dry, and watched football or caught up on their shows, some got out and did something.
Here’s some of the standouts who celebrated Philly as a winter wonderland with aplomb.
Snowy streets
Driving on Sunday wasn’t a great idea if you didn’t need to, but that didn’t stop someone with a buggy drifting around, up and down Philly’s landmarks, including the Philadelphia Art Museum and City Hall. The circuit around City Hall was done while blasting British singer-songwriter Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need” (H/T to Mark Longenecker and Philly Sports Network writer Jimmy King for the videos).
Skiers and tubers saw a chance to take over the snow-covered streets, towed behind what hopefully is a snow-capable car.
Down the Rocky Steps
The Art Museum steps turned into a sledding hub once there was enough snow covering them, marking a rare occasion when everyone was trying to see who could get down the iconic Rocky Steps quickly.

For those who weren’t up for a trek all the way to Fairmount, it wasn’t too difficult to find a set of steps that could work as a snow ramp.
A deal for a cold one
For the more sedate snow lovers, Philadelphia brewery Human Robot encouraged beer lovers out of the house with a simple promise: For every inch of snow on the ground, they would take a dollar off the price of their Czech-style dark lager, Tmavy 13⁰ — up to eight inches, after which it would be capped at 25 cents.
The wager and the forecast was enticing enough to fill each of HR’s venues — some even skied into the Jenkintown location — and everyone was rewarded when the eight-inch mark was reached. The Tmavy 13⁰ sold out at all but one of the locations, within a couple hours at some, and Human Robot says that over 1,000 pints were served Sunday.
With snow in the forecast next weekend, Human Robot is thinking about running it back with a similar offer.
“Ugh yeah we kinda have to,” Human Robot co-founder Jake Atkinson wrote in an Instagram message. “But we WILL run out, we went through a lot of beer lol.
