BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly fled police on a motorbike and dragged an officer 150 feet down an embankment Tuesday in North Tonawanda, police announced.
Officials said a motorbike was reported as driving recklessly and fled from Niagara Falls police. The bike, driven by 26-year-old Shawn Candelaria, was then seen entering North Tonawanda when officers tried to stop it.
Candelaria allegedly failed to stop for officers and a pursuit started southbound on River Road, and continued into the City of Tonawanda, where he reportedly struck a vehicle on Niagara Street.
Police said Officer Hussey exited his patrol vehicle and tried to detain Candelaria, who continued accelerating on his motorbike. Hussey was then reportedly dragged down the embankment into Niawanda Park, where the bike crashed.
Candelaria was then taken into custody. Police said he was found with a loaded handgun. He was charged with the following:
- second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- first-degree reckless endangerment
- second-degree obstruction of governmental administration
- numerous vehicle and traffic violations
Officials said Hussey and Candelaria sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Candelaria was arraigned in North Tonawanda City Court and bail was set at $40,000.
