Former Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who retired after last season as the club’s all-time leader in appearances, will remain with the organization as club ambassador and sporting advisor, the team announced Thursday.
Guzan, 40, will report to chief soccer officer Chris Henderson and work across all areas of soccer operations while continuing his community involvement.
From goalpost to front office
During his 21-year professional career, Guzan made 551 club appearances between Chivas USA, Aston Villa, and Atlanta United. He helped lead the Five Stripes to the 2018 MLS Cup championship and the 2019 U.S. Open Cup title before announcing his retirement in December.
His new responsibilities include supporting player recruitment, scouting, data analytics, and youth development. Guzan earned a master’s degree from the Global Institute of Sport over the past two years while preparing for a potential front office career.
“I’m going to be fortunate enough to be able to kind of go through all the different departments of the other side of the building and see how it all works behind the scenes,” Guzan said.
Media and community work
Guzan will maintain broadcasting opportunities with networks including TNT Sports, Apple TV, and Fox Sports while producing content for Atlanta United’s media department. Local press voted him the club’s media ambassador in both 2024 and 2025.
He will also continue his role as ambassador for the Unified Team, the club’s community program serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Henderson said Guzan is “uniquely positioned to add value to our organization while he continues to develop his professional skillset in this next phase of his career.”
International credentials
The second overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft played 64 games for the U.S. Men’s National Team, the fifth-most by an American goalkeeper. He won three Concacaf Gold Cups and appeared in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, plus the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Guzan spent nine seasons in England’s Premier League with Aston Villa, Hull, and Middlesbrough before joining Atlanta United ahead of the club’s inaugural 2017 season.
Atlanta United opens the MLS regular season Feb. 21 at FC Cincinnati before hosting Real Salt Lake on March 7 for its home opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
