BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A new baseball league in Bowling Green is making room for every athlete, no matter their abilities.
The Bambino Buddy Ball League will launch its inaugural season later this year, serving children and young adults ages 5 to 20 with physical and intellectual disabilities. Players will be paired with volunteer “buddies” from the community who help guide them on the field, ensure their safety and encourage them throughout the game.
“I believe that every kid deserves the opportunity to be part of a team,” said Christopher Maxwell, chairman and president of the Bowling Green Youth Baseball League. “We are not different, we’re all the same. As far as I’m concerned, I’m more than welcome to let any kid join this league, no matter what.”
Maxwell said the league’s goal is to foster inclusion, friendships and teamwork. Community support has already started pouring in, with sponsors including the Bowling Green Hot Rods, Bluegrass Dedicated, Upward Behavior, and American Home Builders.
Amber Wilson, the league’s Bambino Buddy Ball liaison and a parent of a participant, said the program is about more than the sport itself. “It’s not about therapy. It’s about fun,” Wilson said. “Sometimes it’s just about running around on the field, playing in the dirt and seeing a smile on my son’s face.”
Registration is open for both players and volunteers. More information is available on the Bambino Buddy Ball Bowling Green Facebook page or by emailing buddyballbgyb@gmail.com.
