Police in Abington Township are warning the community to be alert after, they claim, an organized criminal group targeted an Asian business owner.
Officials posted a statement about the incident, and how it may be a part of a growing national trend, on social media.
According to police, on Monday, July 7, 2025, a resident in Abington Township returned home to discover a robbery in progress at their residence.
Officials didn’t provide a specific street where this home was located, but they said the homeowner’s interruption caused the suspected burglars to flee the scene.
An investigation into this incident, officials said, revealed that the home was specifically targeted because the homeowners are Asian and they own or operate a business in the area.
The targeting of the homes of Asian business owners is part of a national trend, officials said, claiming organized criminal groups are known to do this following “the harmful stereotype that these individuals keep high-value items in their residences.”
Police said that organized groups have been known to conduct surveillance on Asian-owned businesses in order to learn the routines and home addresses of owners, in order to commit crimes.
Abington Township police officials said they are working with other law enforcement agencies to prevent similar instances.
And, they warned the community to be alert and call 9-1-1 if anyone observes suspicious behavior in the community.
Police did not provide additional information on the recent break-in, nor did they provide details on the suspects involved.
But, an investigation is ongoing.
