SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Bayside Aquarium at SeaWorld San Diego reopens this week with a new design and a wide variety of marine creatures.
After a long-awaited renovation project, Bayside Aquarium will be ready to welcome back guests of all ages starting this Friday.
The space, which is housed underneath the Bayside Amphitheater, originally opened to the public in 1965 and was known as the Marine Aquarium.
The refreshed exhibit invites people to marvel up close at freshwater and saltwater species through smaller displays and a more “intimate design.” Featured animals include axolotls, a California two-spot octopus, brown-banded bamboo sharks and more.
“This space is about giving guests a closer look at some of the incredible species they may not usually encounter,” said Danielle Castillo, curator of zoological operations, in a news release.
Guests of the new aquarium will be able to come face-to-face with two axolotls, amphibians that are native to Mexico. Axolotls are known for their ability to regenerate limbs and are critically endangered.
Bayside Aquarium and SeaWorld San Diego offer refuge and rehabilitation by serving as a temporary shelter for species such as clams, corals and others through the Wildlife Confiscation Network.
The pilot program was launched by the Wildlife Trafficking Alliance under the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which ensures that animals seized at U.S. ports of entry get the immediate care they need.
More information about the aquarium, including tickets and hours of operation, as well as SeaWorld San Diego’s conservation efforts can be found on the park’s website.
