SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The Bay Area Rapid Transit District touted its latest published crime report on Tuesday, which shows an overall drop year over year in violent crimes as well as property crimes.
Figures in the BART Police Department’s July 2025 report showed violent crimes on the transit system, including homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, dropped from a total of 203 in the first seven months of 2024 to 130 in the first seven months of this year. Robberies notably dropped from 126 to 37 year over year, according to the report. Aggravated assaults have gone up from 73 to 92.
Total property crimes on BART, which includes burglary, larceny, auto theft and arson, fell from 1,091 for the first seven months of 2024 to 547 this year, the report stated. Larceny thefts plummeted from 780 to 391 year over year, BART PD data showed, and auto thefts dropped from 295 to 143. Arson is the one property crime category that rose, going from 0 to 3.
Despite BART rolling out a majority of its Next Generation Fare Gates across its stations, the July 2025 report shows fare evasion citations have not seen a dramatic downturn over the past year. In the last six months ending in July 2025, there was an average of 212 fare evasion citations per month. In the six-month period prior to that, there was an average of 202 citations per month.
All 50 BART stations are expected to have the new fare gates by the end of the year, transit officials said Tuesday.
