EASTERN KENTUCKY (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources says Eastern Kentucky’s bald eagle population is soaring, with a 20% increase in active nests documented in the region since the last survey.
Biologists surveyed the area earlier this year as part of a rotating, statewide aerial monitoring effort that began in 2021. Officials say 41 active bald eagle nests were identified during the 2025 spring survey—up from 34 nests counted in 2022.
The increase marks another milestone in the bald eagle’s recovery. Once nearly wiped out in the 1960s due to habitat loss and pesticide use, the species has made a strong comeback across the U.S., including Kentucky.
Wildlife officials credit ongoing conservation work and programs like Kentucky Wild, which supports protection efforts for birds of prey and other at-risk wildlife species.
